WERDE MUNTER
| Composer: | Johann Schop, ca. 1595-1667, from Johann Rist’s Himmlische Lieder, 1642; harmonization from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cantata No. 147, 1723. |
| Versions: | Originally written as a hymn, Bach arranged it into his famous cantata, but this form is not suitable for congregational singing, though it would work as a motet for a choir and instrumentalists. The choral parts of Bach’s arrangment were subsequently adapted into the hymn tune. The melismas in the traditional arrangement can be a little tricky, and some may prefer the adjustments to them found in many modern hymnals. |
